Journal - Ride 18, Broke my Personal Record

160.13km - 6hrs 23mins - 1455m Ascension

To say the least and the very obvious...I AM EXHAUSTED.

With that being said, i'll try to keep this as concise as I can.

As an FYI - 160km equates to what is called a 'Century Ride (100 miles)', strived for by many cyclists. CROSSED OFF MY BOOK.

Short Description

  1. Woke up at 5:30am
  2. Got ready
  3. Went out at 6:42am
  4. Cycled my heart/legs/brains out
  5. Stopped for a refill break at the 87km mark (10:15am)
  6. At this point, it was as warm as a normal summer's day (GREAT HELP BY THE WAY)
  7. DAMN BUGS ARE EVERYWHERE
  8. Personal Record Broken  (yay)

You may be asking yourself as to why I cycled for 160km in Gozo??? WHY NOT MORE ?!?!?!

Well....The answer is simple really.... It's great fun to challenge yourself to break your own personal records! I had also been planning to do something of the sort in these Easter Holidays and this is the answer.

Secondly, breaking any personal record is monumentally satisfying, albeit excruciatingly exhausting.

By the way, my previous Distance Personal Record was of 150km (also in Gozo).

The second question on your mind might be :

"Why does your Strava show just 135k and not 160km?!  HUH...LIAR!!!"

Well...Technology tends to 'break' in the most opportunistic of times. This was one instance of that happening. Luckily however, my trusty SIGMA ROX 10.0 was at the ready to put you naysayers into your place !

The third and most daunting question on your mind must be :

"Where the hell did you cycle for 160km in Gozo (which is 14km in length)?!?!"

That is a very daunting question indeed. It is also very daunting to me whenever I think about cycling for an elongated period. However the answer is very simple and also extremely boring to hear.

It is purely a Test of INSANITY.

You pick a nice & long road with not too much inclined surface and you repeat it....YOU REPEAT IT TILL YOUR LEGS FEEL LIKE JELLY.

I'd like to finish up with this -

If you plan on cycling in Gozo in the timespan of around 9am till WHENEVER on a sunny, warm day.

PUT ON SOME MAGIC BUG REPELLENT.

THE PESKY INSECTS ARE EVERYWHERE AND THEY WILL SWARM ONTO YOU LIKE BEES TO HONEY. ON YOUR FACE, LEGS, ARMS, EVERYWHERE. YOU WILL TURN BLACK WITH THE SHEER AMOUNT OF BUGS THAT WILL FLOCK ONTO YOU. IT IS EXTREMELY INFURIATING TO SAY THE LEAST. YOU WILL PROBABLY SWALLOW A FEW ALSO. YUCK...
