Race Recap - 2017 Tour De France Stage #1 Düsseldorf

Foreword 

Yes, this is something completely new.

In short, I will be attempting as best I can to commentate in very simple 'highlights-only' form, the races of the major cycling tours - Tour De France / Vuelta / Giro etc etc...

Highlights

  • Elie Gesbert (TFO) : First & the Youngest rider of the race finishes at a time of 17' 24"

  • E. Gesbert beat by Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Merida) just 2 minutes after

  • Andriy Grivko (Astana) sets a time of 16' 21", putting him in the lead

  • Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto NL Jumbo) : Was the first to fall off his bike just 40 minutes after the race began (14:55 / 15:55), he continued on after getting back on his feet.

  • Nikias Arndt (Sunweb) : new leader at a time of 16' 20", just 1 second ahead of Grivko

  • Matteo Trentin (Quick-Step Floors) : beats Arndt with a time of 16' 14"

  • Vasil Kiriyienka (SKY) : 16' 11" for 3rd Place

  • George Bennett (Lotto NL Jumbo) : Loses control of his bike over a storm drain. A Bike swap was required.

  • Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) - 16' 29"

  • Richie Porte (BMC) : sets a disappointing time, 47seconds slower than Geraint Thomas (below)

  • Tony Martin (Katusha - Alpecin) : A time trial favourite, sets a time of 16' 12"

  • Stefan Kung (BMC) - 16' 09" for 2nd Place

  • Chris Froome (SKY) - 16' 16"

  • Geraint Thomas (SKY) : Sets the winning time of 16' 04"

  • Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) : Encountered a very bad crash, losing traction from his front wheel which propelled him into the crash barriers. Sadly, this ended Valverde's race as a whole on just the first race. He was sent to hospital straight after.

    UPDATE : Valverde is speculated to be suffering from a broken knee cap 

  • G. Thomas (SKY) first time in his carrier bearing the Yellow Jersey.

Conclusions

  • Sky gained a very strong stranglehold over the Race after just the First Race, having claimed 4 spots in the top 10 but being the very first race, anything can happen!
